Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Monday, declared three days of mourning for the 59 dead victims that were killed in recent attacks on communities in Logo and Guma Local Government Areas of the State by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Governor Ortom, in a statement issued by his chief press secretary, Terver Akase, said that the mourning period will start on Tuesday and end with a church service at the IBB square and mass burial of the victims in Makurdi on Thursday.
The governor directed that all offices must fly their Flags at half-mast within the mourning period while work will close at 1pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The statement further stated that, Thursday which will be for the day for the church service and burial of the victims would be work-free day in the State.
According to him, state government will make coffins for the 59 dead bodies.
He disclosed that 39 dead victims are from Guma, while 20 dead victims are from Logo LGAs respectively and have been deposited at various mortuaries.
”Those ones that are already decomposing, the governor had directed that they should be buried”, Akase stated.
