Executive Director of Crime Victims Foundation of Nigeria, CRIVIFON, Mrs. Gloria Egbuji, yesterday, said no fewer than 17,000 officers and men of the Lagos State Police Command have been trained in human rights programmes since the inception of the foundation, 12 years ago.

Speaking during the 25th graduation ceremony of the police human rights officers organised by the foundation at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, Mrs. Egbuji noted that the training has enhanced their job performance, adding that she initiated the programme with the approval of the police high command based on the discovery that the country has a police force that was well known for the abuse of human rights.

In his speech, the chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ikeja branch, Mr Adesina Ogunlana, advised Nigerians to consider community policing as currently canvassed by the Nigeria Police authorities as an age-old concept effectively applied in pre-colonial times by community leaders in the governance of their communities but regrettably misused in contemporary times.

One of the highlights of the occasion was the presentation of award by CRIVIFON to six Nigerians for their various contributions to humanity in different ways. They included the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State; Mr. Imohinmi Edgar, Editor of Vanguard Newspaper, Eze Anaba, President, Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria, Mr. Odita Sunday, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. Titilayo Shitta-Bey, a philanthropist; Mr. Moses Ajayi and the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Mr. Tajudeen Agbede.
