Lagos guard kills colleague over sharing of N1,000 gift

Afeez Hanafi

A security guard at Oko Agbon, Iwaya, Yaba area of Lagos, has been detained at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for allegedly killing his colleague, Ahmed Oyesiji.

The suspect, Moshood Adigun, reportedly stabbed Oyesiji in the neck with a broken bottle and the victim bled to death at the spot.

Adigun was said to have borrowed N4,000 from the deceased sometime ago and had yet to repay it.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the relationship between the guards turned sour around 8am on Monday over the sharing of N1,000 gift a passerby gave them at their duty post.

The money was reportedly kept by Oyesiji who was on night duty.

As he wanted to close from work in the morning, it was gathered that Adigun asked him for a N500 share. But Oyesiji allegedly declined, saying he had converted Adigun’s share to the part payment of the N4,000 debt.

A resident, who gave his name simply as Mayowa, said the ensuing argument between the duo led to a fight, during which Adigun smashed a bottle and stabbed Oyesiji in the neck.

He said, “They worked as security guards in the community. Moshood (Adigun) owed Ahmed (Oyesiji) N4,000. Somebody gave them N1,000 while they were on duty on Monday. Instead of them to share the money, Ahmed said he would not give Moshood his share. He said Moshood’s debt remained N3,500. They argued over it and fought.

“After they were separated, Moshood went for a bottle, broke it and stabbed him in the neck. He was bleeding heavily and within five minutes, he died.”

Our correspondent learnt the suspect was arrested by the police from the Sabo division while the corpse was deposited in the morgue of the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba.

The deceased’s elder sister, Kehinde, described him as a diligent man, saying that he was also into Disk Jockey business.

Lamenting how painful his death was to the family, Kehinde said it was unfortunate he had no child who could have been a solace to them and urged the police to bring the suspect to justice.

She said, “He was 27 years old and was very hard working. He was a DJ and a lot of people know him in the community and environs.

“He was returning home from work that morning when his colleague ran after him. He (Adigun) stabbed him from the back because my brother refused to give him N500 out of N1,000 somebody gifted them. Meanwhile, he owed my brother N4,000 which he did not want to refund.

“Our mother lives in Abeokuta, Ogun State. She is aware of his death and is very devastated. Ahmed is very precious to us.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said investigations had commenced on the incident.

He said, “The suspect stabbed and killed his colleague over a minor disagreement. He has been arrested and investigation is in full swing. The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the SCIID.”

In a similar development, a 25-year-old man, Toyeeb Balogun, has been arrested by the police for the murder of one Olaitan Aregbesola, a resident of Posoku Street, Aga, Ikorodu area of Lagos.

Balogun reportedly stabbed the victim in the chest and he gave up the ghost at the Ikorodu General Hospital where he was rushed for treatment.

PUNCH Metro learnt that there was a disagreement between Balogun and Aregbesola and the former invited his gang members to join him in dealing with the victim.

The PPRO, who confirmed the incident, said Aregbesola’s corpse was taken to the general hospital mortuary for autopsy.

He said, “The suspect and the victim had been having a lingering quarrel, which was settled for them. Everybody thought it had been settled. They met again on February 5, 2018 around 5.30pm and resumed the quarrel which turned violent.

“The suspect and his friends fought the victim. In the process, the suspect stabbed him. The victim died in the hospital while receiving treatment. The suspect and one of his accomplices have been arrested and they have been taken to the SCIID for further investigations.”
