A total of 485 athletes from 15 countries are expected to participate in the Asaba 2018 Africa Senior Athletics Championships at the Asaba Stadium from August 1 to 5.
They are Algeria (60), Cape Verde (six), Egypt (22), Kenya (61), Togo (15), Djibouti (eight), Ivory Coast (37), Rwanda (four), Senegal (60), Seychelles (nine), Mauritius (15), DR Congo (22), Gambia (eight), Congo (17) and Nigeria (141).
According to the Local Organising Committee for the competition, 110 officials will be part of the event.
LOC chairman Solomon Ogba said the 14 countries who will vie for honours alongside Nigeria at the championships had submitted their provisional lists.
The former Athletics Federation of Nigeria president said, “I can guarantee you that we will be having a historic championship in Asaba as every country will be represented. The LOC will be sponsoring two athletes from all the countries so you can be sure that everybody will be present.”
Ogba said the target of the LOC was to make Asaba 2018 the best ever in the history of the Africa Senior Athletics Championships.
“We want to set a new standard as far as the Africa Senior Athletics Championships is concerned, the goal is to make this edition as glamorous as the World Athletics Championships itself,” he said.
Ogba during the week named the Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick as the head of the Special Duties Sub-Committee for the event.
Ogba, in a statement by the head of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee Olukayode Thomas, said the Delta State Government was determined to host a standard competition.
