The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board said only 550,357 of the 1,840,225 candidates who applied for admissions into tertiary institutions for the 2017/2018 academic session were offered admission.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said this on Wednesday during a briefing to announce the commencement of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, scheduled to start on March 9.
Oloyede said no fewer than 1,662,762 candidates would be sitting for the 2018 UTME which would hold in 605 Computer-Based Centres across the country.
The JAMB registrar noted that despite the 1.8million applicants in 2017, only 842,505 candidates made the required cut-off marks and also obtained the required Ordinary Level results.
Oloyede said, “The 2017 admission was conducted using the Central Admissions Processing System which provided the candidates with the opportunity to track their admissions.
“The admission statistics show that 1,840,225 candidates applied for the 2017 UTME, out of which 842,505 possessed the minimum O’Level requirement and the cut-off points.
“Out of this number, 550,357 got admission in 2017. Also, 1,662,762 candidates registered for the 2018 UTME within two months. Candidates are urged to note that there shall be no rescheduling of any examination. Candidates are to adhere strictly to the date and time allocated to them for the examination as any candidate who fails to turn up automatically misses the examination.”
The registrar, who warned that any candidate, CBT operator or JAMB worker caught in examination malpractices would be handed over to the security agencies, noted that about 6,500 officials had been deployed for this examination.
Oloyede added, “All officials and candidates are warned not to bring any of the prohibited items into the examination venues as ignorance would not be taken as defence. Anyone caught will be handed over to security agencies for appropriate sanction.
“We are fully ready to commence the 2018 examination. Through research, we have discovered a number of items that aid examination malpractices. The board has put out a list of banned items from the venue of examination. These include: wristwatches, cameras, recorders, calculators, microphones, spy glasses, cell phones, earpieces, ink and pen readers, smart lenses, smart rings and jewelry, smart buttons, bluetooth devices and storage devices among others.”
The board said 367 visually impaired candidates would be sitting for the 2018 UTME as against 201 that took the examination in 2017.
According to the breakdown of states which applied for the 2018 UTME, Imo was the highest with 92,890 applicants, while Oyo followed with 86,695.
Osun is third with 86,044 candidates while Ogun came fourth with 80,371 applicants.
