The three-week Governor Seriake Dickson Unity Football Cup competition, tagged, ‘Ogbia Challenge’, came to a climax on Friday at Opume in Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
The competition, which began with 32 teams drawn from communities in Ogbia, saw Otuasega beating Otuokpoti 1-0 in the final to claim the title and N500,000 cash prize.
The competition, sponsored by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, and the Ogbia Restoration Crusaders, was organised to keep youths away from social vices in the area.
The grand finale was graced by the Deputy Governor of the state, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd.); the Secretary to the State Government, Kamela Okara; Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Perekiye Buruboyefe; Obanobhan of Ogbia, King Charles Owaba; top government functionaries and football enthusiasts.
Jonah, who was impressed with the performances of the finalists, directed the state’s sports ministry to include the Dickson’s Unity Football Cup in their sports calendar, saying similar events should be replicated in every Local Government Area of the state.
He commended Iworiso-Markson, and the Ogbia Restoration Crusaders, the organisers of the competition, describing them as true lovers of peace and unity who should be emulated by all.
Meanwhile, Governor Seriake Dickson has called on the private sector to key into his administration’s commitment to promote and drive sports development in the state.
