Egypt on Saturday won the men and women’s events of the Lagos Squash Classics at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
Fourth seed Salma Youssef defeated second seed Menna Nasser 3-2 in the women’s event while fourth seed Karim El-Hammamy beat unseeded Ahmed Hosny 3-0 to win the men’s category of the $20,000 tournament.
The highlight of the event was Hosny’s concession of defeat to his compatriot El-Hammamy in the third game of the final after the eventual champion got injured but still wanted to continue the game.
In the U-19 category, Rofiat Abdulazeez of Kwara State defeated Busayo Olatunji of Lagos State 3-0 to win the girls’ title while Onaopemipo Adegoke of Lagos, who caused an upset in the first round of the men’s event, defeated Desmond Iguodala of Headwaters Squash Club 3-1 to claim the boys’ title.
El-Hammamy praised Hosny’s spirit of sportsmanship, saying he was not expecting him to concede defeat in the game.
