Ekiti monarchs, Olukere disagree over royal status

Kamarudeen Ogundele, Ado Ekiti

The Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Olukere of Ikere Ekiti, Oba Ganiyu Obasoyin, have disagreed over his recognition as a traditional ruler of the town.

Addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti, the Chairman of the traditional rulers and the Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju, stated that the Olukere was not an oba as being portrayed.

He stated that the traditional rulers reached the decision at their 205th statutory meeting in Ado Ekiti.

Oba Ademolaju cited the provisions of the Ekiti State Chiefs Law, Cap C 5 in support of their position.

He added, “Referring to him as a king is an aberration, anomalous, unacceptable and misleading to the Nigerian public. This is more so as the application of the Olukere for recognition is still pending before the state government.”

Asked if the Olukere had been notified of the decision of the council, Oba Ademolaju said, “He didn’t wait for our report before he began to call himself an Oba. So, we don’t have to consult him before we set the records straight.

“If he’s a king, why is he seeking recognition? He has a pending application here for recognition. He should be patient because he is not yet a traditional ruler, and he should wait for the outcome of his application before the Council.”

But the Olukere through his lawyer, Morakinyo Ogele, rejected the position of the traditional rulers.

He said, “The traditional rulers sent a team to the palace of the Olukere on a fact-finding mission about two years ago and have yet to release their report.

“The timing of the release of their statement is also suspect. Why is it when the Olukere has an issue with the state government?

“They should make the report of their findings public and stop issuing mere statement. With due respect, the statement is unacceptable and prejudicial.”
