Kogi plans panel over herdsmen killings

Gbenga Odogun

The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, on Saturday, said the state government would set up a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate last week’s herdsmen killings in Oganenigwu, Dekina Local Government Area, which claimed 25 lives.

Bello stated this when addressing soldiers while conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the troubled spot where an entire village was sacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen in continuous attacks from Tuesday to Thursday.

The governor met a deserted village as only two surviving men were on the ground to receive him and his entourage.

He, however, promised that the government, in collaboration with the law enforcement agents, would prevent any further attack.

“This is going to be the first and the last of this type of attack. We will not play politics with the lives of our people. We will not shy away from our responsibilities” Bello said.

According to him, it is the responsibility of every government to secure the lives and properties of its citizens.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Police Command has said the herdsmen/farmers clashes in Oganenigwu have been brought under control and that normalcy is gradually returning to the area.

The Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, Mohammed Barde, stated this on Saturday, while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Lokoja.

Barde said since the increased presence of security personnel in the area, the crisis had been checkmated.

He added that “only 12” people were reportedly killed in the clash between the farmers and herders in the area.

According to him, Kogi was relatively peaceful before the crisis broke out.

He added that the Anyigba Area Commander ensured that security agents were deployed to the area.

He urged the Fulani herdsmen to stop grazing their cattle on any farm and the farmers to stop killing the herdsmen’s cows.
