Ladoja loyalists fault Oyelese over Oyo PDP crisis

Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan

A group loyal to a former governor of Oyo State, Rashidi Ladoja, has said that a former Minister of Mines and Power, Wole Oyelese, is supporting illegality by asking Ladoja to endorse the harmonisation of executives in the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Oyelese in a statement he signed on Wednesday had called on Ladoja not to intimidate the PDP into accepting his wishes, stating that Ladoja’s rejection of harmonisation of executives of the party was unfortunate.

The Ladoja loyalists including the state House of Assembly lawmaker representing the Ibadan South-East constituency, Fatai Adesina and his counterparts, Kunle Busari and Yinka Omikunle, described Oyelese’s statement as an “outburst of a scavenging paperweight.”

The group in a statement signed by its members said, “It is no surprise that Oyelese is supporting illegality by asking Ladoja to endorse the harmonisation. “Ladoja’s option of dumping the PDP is no empty threat. He and the people of the state will not sanction the influencing of national officers of the party to take a decision in favour of a tiny group, which out of desperation, is bent on lording its wish on the majority.

“For the avoidance of doubt, wherever Ladoja goes, that is where the people of the state will go in 2019. Next year, it will be so glaring on whose side the masses are. To refresh Oyelese’s memory, Ladoja produced four members of the House of Representatives and seven House of Assembly members in the state in the 2011 elections. In 2015, he produced eight House of Assembly members. How many councillors has Oyelese produced?”

Meanwhile, a media aide to Ladoja, Lanre Latinwo, has said that the former governor’s decision to dump the PDP had not been finalised even though Ladoja as a democrat would not be comfortable to be in a party where internal democracy was not guaranteed.

Latinwo, while reacting to a plea by a governorship aspirant of the party in the state, Seyi Makinde that Ladoja should not make good his threat to dump the party, said Ladoja was already working hard to ensure the installation of a people’s government in the state in 2019.

He said, “As long as people continue to believe in influencing party officers to take wrong decisions, peace and unity will continue to elude the PDP. We hope the party hierarchy has learnt some lessons from the errors of the past. There is bound to be winners and losers in any contest. But in the case of the Oyo PDP congresses, there were no victors, no vanquished. All the five parties that came together in the new PDP have representatives in the state executive.”
