The Federal Ministry of Education has held a training workshop for teachers in Federal Government Colleges on how to respond during terror attacks and other emergencies.
During the training, which was held in Abuja, more than 200 teachers drawn from all Federal Government Colleges across the country also learnt how to make safe evacuation plans during emergencies and attacks.
The Permanent Secretary, Sonny Echono, said the training would help to create awareness in government-owned secondary schools on what should be done during emergencies and disasters.
Echono said, “The importance of education in emergency preparedness and response for teachers in our colleges cannot be over-emphasised. With the growing insecurity in the country heightened by an overwhelming pupils’ population, there is need to awaken our security consciousness and preparedness.
“The recent epidemic at the Queen’s College, Lagos State, claimed three lives and this ugly incident generated a lot of controversies.”
The Director, Education Support Services, Mrs Justina Ibe, said the lack of perimeter fencing had increased the vulnerability of the schools and placed a burden on the management to take an extra care.
In one of the presentations to the teachers, our correspondent learnt that teachers were taught on “evacuation of pupils to safe havens.”
The presentation partly reads, “At all times, students must remain seated together as a class. To evacuate to a safe haven, identify evacuation routes ahead of time, and inform parents of this alternate site. Schools that face known risks such as flooding and land slide should arrange and prepare safe havens away from school ahead of time with emergency supplies.
“For dangers outside the school that prevent normal student release, such as severe weather or flooding, or terrorist attack, shelter-in-place is appropriate when evacuation is not necessary. There should be a school public address system. The administration must announce to pupils and teachers to stay in or return to indoor shelter areas. They must monitor and provide updates and give instructions. They must announce “all clear” when the emergency has ended.”
