Police shielding mastermind of my son’s murder – Hamburger’s mother

Afeez Hanafi

The mother of the slain Zone C Chairman, Motorcycle Operators Association, Lagos State, Rasaq Bello, aka Hamburger, has accused the police of shielding the person who allegedly orchestrated his murder.

The mother, 82-year-old Alhaja Simbiat Bello, said it would be a shame if she died without the killers of her son and their mastermind being brought to justice.

She lamented that justice was eluding her son despite the promise made by the police to the family that everbody behind the killing would be arrested and prosecuted.

Hamburger was shot dead on May 29, 2017, at Shogunle, in the Oshodi area of the state during a council primary election of the All Progressives Congress.

One Samson Agbatoye, aka Golden, and Babatunde Saka, aka Hanger, were arrested by the Lagos State Police Command in July 2017 in connection with the murder.

The Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team also apprehended a self-confessed serial killer, Adeola Williams, aka Ade Lawyer, on February 14, 2018, for the murder of Hamburger and one Pinero, the personal assistant to the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Idumota branch, Kunle Poly.

Simbiat, while reliving the death of her son to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, alleged that the police had refused to go after the mastermind of the killing despite the arrest of the suspects.

She said, “The police assured me that they would fish out those behind the killing. The then Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, visited the family and gave us that assurance. Those that were arrested then have been released by the court.

“Recently, the police arrested Ade Lawyer and he was said to have confessed to killing Hamburger. Our expectation is that the police will expose the person that masterminded his murder, but they are covering up the person. We have not heard anything from the police.”

The octogenarian urged the police authorities to ensure justice was served, saying she would die unfulfilled if the perpetrators were not brought to book.

“I have been mourning since he was killed. My mind is troubled; but I hope the police will do justice on the case. They should not let me die without seeing that justice has been done. I will have a bad impression about the police if this case is swept under the carpet,” she added.

The elder brother of the deceased, Adeoye Bello, said he had yet to get over the shock of Hamburger’s murder.

He added that justice was the only thing that would give solace to the family.

He said, “What we are expecting from the police is for them to reveal the person or persons behind his killing. That is what will show that they are doing their job and that law-abiding citizens are safe. But in a situation like this, nobody is safe. The perpetrators can kill more people and nothing will happen.

“I have the confidence that if the police want to do their job, they will do it perfectly and all those involved will be brought to book.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said although the incident happened when Owoseni was the CP in the state, the command would investigate the case.

He said, “Policing is on a continuum irrespective of who is at the helm of affairs. All cases of murder before the assumption of office by the present CP are also being investigated. In the fullness of time, findings of our investigation will be made known to the public.

“As regards the released suspects, that is within the purview of the court and not the police.”Copyright PUNCH.
