Total Nigeria Plc has empowered 20 youths who graduated from its 2016/2017 Skills Acquisition Programme in Makera and Kakuri districts of Kaduna State with business starter packs.
The starter packs contain work tools required to establish the youths in small scale businesses, after successfully completing their respective one-year vocational training, a statement by the oil company said.
Total Nigeria said that seven of the graduating students who were trained in tailoring, six in computer studies, two in hairdressing and five of them in welding, received the items at the Total Nigeria Plc Lubricant Blending Plant, Kaduna.
It read, “The skills acquisition programme is a sustainable youth development scheme designed to address one of the company’s focal Corporate Social Responsibility pillars; local and economic development.
“Under this programme, less-privileged youths of its host communities are trained and empowered in vocations of their choice which include but are not limited to welding and fabrication, furniture making, fashion and designing, computer studies, hair and beauty art and fish/crop farming.
“Since its inception in 2008, this programme has graduated 90 youths in Kaduna State alone.
“In addition to the starter packs, the company stated that a shop with two years paid rent was presented to each of the beneficiaries to ensure the sustainability of the start-ups.”
The Managing Director, Total Nigeria Plc, Jean Philippe Torres, who was represented by the General Manager, Human Resources and Corporate Services/Company Secretary, Bunmi Popoola-Mordi, encouraged the graduates to keep believing in their capabilities and strength in order to become achievers in their different vocations.
He implored them to work hard and contribute positively to the growth and development of their communities.
In his response, the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Mr. Dan Auta, appreciated Total Nigeria for its resilient support over the years.
He urged the beneficiaries to put to best use, the equipment they had received, assuring them of the state government’s supervision of the programme to ensure its success.
