The Defence Headquarters, on Saturday, assured Nigerians that the troops of the Nigerian Army and other services deployed in Exercise Ayem Akpatuma, also known as Cat Race, were on the alert to arrest the killer herdsmen ravaging Plateau, Kogi and other surrounding states.
The Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. John Agim, stated this in a text message to our correspondent while reacting to a question on whether fresh deployments had been made to tackle the latest rounds of herdsmen’s violence in the North-Central and Middle Belt states.
The herdsmen, during the week, attacked the Miango and Mararaba Dare communities near Jos, Plateau State, killing at least 25 persons. The army had said the herdsmen also shot dead two soldiers during a gun battle at Rafiki village.
Also on Thursday, the herdsmen attacked Oganenigwu community in the Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing at least 32 residents.
The military’s spokesman, said on Saturday that the troops were on top of the situation.
“Exercise Cat Race will, by the grace of God, contain the herdsmen’s killings in these states,” Agim said.
Meanwhile, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, could not be reached for comments on the herdsmen crises as of press time.
