iREP, archiving and Rumour Has It

The eighth edition of iREP (iREPRESENT) which held from March 22 to 25, 2018, may have come and gone. However, the issues it raised still linger. This year’s edition of iREP – ‘Archiving Africa II: Frontiers and New Narratives’ – was a continuation of its last edition and both editions focused on archiving (1 & 2). Archiving, to put it simply, has to do with the storage, preservation and restoration of films.

Long before now, it was fairly common knowledge and cause for lamentation that we did not have good archives in Nigeria. There are many old films that we can no longer access just because they were not properly stored or preserved. Where are all those NTA TV programmes? Even if they exist, what shape are they in?

From the reported comments by the Managing Director of the NFC (Nigerian Film Corporation), Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, he created the impression that they are on top of things as far as archiving is concerned.

His claims is that the NFC is digitising thousands of films and one of such films is Shaihu Umar, which is a Nigerian classic. He also used that opportunity to call on filmmakers to try out the National Film and Video Sound Archive. I did not know the national archive was this functional.

Since this is a government agency, we may have to take its promotion with a little caution. One cannot be sure what the true situation is. The other day, I heard a very embarrassing story about Nigeria’s participation at the International Federation of Film Archives. It was as bad as Nigeria owing dues and how we were generally not pulling our weight. But now, all appears to be well.

Bravo to the organisers of iREP for turning attention to archiving.

Rumour Has It, second time around

Season 2 of Rumour Has It, directed by Adeola Osunkojo, is already in its sixth episode. Make that the seventh episode, by the time you are reading this. I managed to miss all of its first season. To be fair, I hadn’t heard about the web series produced by the GTBank-owned Ndani TV. I only noticed the series when Linda Ihuoma Ejiofor began to promote it on social media this year.

Season 1 had Uru Eke, Blossom Chukwujekwe, Annee Icha and others. Season 2 has Linda Ihuoma Ejiofor as Dolapo, Mawuli Gavor as Franklin including Jemima Osunde as Ranti and Stan Nze as Arinze who were also in the first season. A new episode is realeased online every Friday.

The thing about Rumour Has It is that each season feels like it’s the real life story of someone we know in the public eye. Season 1 was about the super vlogger Obi (Uru Eke) whose husband impregnated another woman. And that sounded very much like a vlogger whose real life story is very similar.

Season Two is not so recognisable. The vloggers’ stories continue in season 2. This time, it is the wife/CEO, Dolapo, who cheats, and is stalked by a delusional man. Unlike the first season, which was very Nollywoodic, this new season is more complicated.

Anyhow, this Friday, tune in and watch Rumour has It on Ndani TV.
