It’s Middle Belt’s turn to produce president —Tor Tiv

John Charles

The Chairman of the Benue State Traditional Council, Prof. James Ayatse, on Saturday, gave his royal blessings to a former Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher, to contest the 2019 presidential election.

The Tor Tiv gave his endorsement when Hagher and state leaders of the Social Democratic Party paid him a visit at his residence in Gboko.

The traditional ruler said it was the turn of central Nigeria to produce the president, after years of sacrifice for national unity and stability.

He said, “Election in Nigeria is not all about money; there is something Nigerians are looking for. They are looking for who will take them to the Promised Land and they see that Hagher has such qualities. I therefore implore Nigerians to do the needful and support Hagher to become Nigeria’s president, come 2019.

“Even though he (Hagher) is running on the platform of the SDP, all political parties must unite and adopt him for president in 2019.

“We have been on our own for over 50 years. The Middle Belt has suffered for the unity of Nigeria, yet power continues to rotate between the South and the far North; power has not resided with us in the Middle Belt since the civil rule era. So, I think it’s about time a Middle Belt person led Nigeria.

“Prof. Hagher is very qualified for the job of president. He is more than qualified for the office. All the things others have done, he too has done. He has been a minister, senator, ambassador, author and university professor, so he won’t be learning on the job.”

Earlier, Hagher, who was accompanied by a former Nigerian Ambassador to Argentina, Mr. Chive Kaave, said he had come to the palace to seek the blessing of the Tor Tiv on his 2019 presidential bid.

The former Pro-Chancellor of Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti, said his ambition was borne out of his deep love for the country.

According to him, if realised, his presidency will make Nigeria one of the most respected countries on earth.

He promised to unite farmers and herdsmen to permanently end internal conflicts in the country.

“There is too much poverty in the land and l am going to be totally a servant leader. I will totally submit myself to the will of the people to build a nation where everyone will live together as one,” he said.
