10 people arrested in Ebonyi state over torture of a pastor who was dehumanized for criticizing a Local Government Chairman in Afikpo
The Police in Ebonyi state says it has arrested 10 people in connection with the torture of a pastor, Okochi Chukwu Obeni.
The Pastor was publicly humiliated for a Facebook post criticizing the Afikpo North local government chairman, Hon. Ogbonnia Oko Enyim.
He was tried and punished by the Traditional Council of his Amasiri community known as the Essa and Isi Oru.
His punishment included being flogged in public. A video of the cleric being flogged went viral and led to outrage.
In the video, he was stripped down to his shorts. His hands were tied behind his back, and he was mercilessly flogged. Dirty water, sand, and grass were also poured on him.
While he was being flogged in public, he was forced to recant his statement criticizing the LGA Chairman.
He ended up in the hospital following the incident and he took to Facebook to say his hand has been paralyzed as a result.
Following outcries and condemnations that greeted the incident, the Police on Wednesday, May 20, announced the arrest of Julius Amadi Nyerere and 9 others for the assault.
Police Spokesman in the state, Loveth Odah stated this in a statement.
“On 14th of May at about 5:pm one Pastor Oko Chukwu Obeni ‘m’ age 30yrs of Ndukwe Amasiri village in Afikpo North LGA of Ebonyi State reported at Afikpo North Division that Isi Oru Age Grade led by one Julius Amadi Nyerere and deputized by one Eze Ogbonna ‘m’ all of the same address dragged him to the Ogo Play ground in the area, tired his both hands to back and flogged him severally with canes which infected multiple injuries all over his body and poured him with filthy water," the spokesperson said.

Can We Tag This AMASIRI KOBOKO?
Otu Obiahu, AJM NEWS
His Name Is Okochi Chukwu Obeni From Amasiri, Afikpo North Local Government Area Of Ebonyi State.
His Offence, As It Can Be Heard In The Video Was That He Published And Posted False Information Concerning Some Highly Placed People (From Amasiri), Including The ESSA Council Of Elders And The Local Government Chairman On His Facebook Wall.
If At All He Was Wrong, Do You Think It's Right To Handle Him This Way?
Someone Said: "This is not right, you can not take law into your hand, you can not use wrong to correct wrong. We are not under military regime for God's sake. This kind of judgement must stop. It is called Jungle Justice!
"If he has committed any offence, he should be taken to the Police Station and Police will do the needful, by charging him to Court for Libel and peddling falsehood.
And the court will in turn determine his fate".
What's Your Opinion?
HERE IS THE FACEBOOK POST THAT CAUSED THE WHOLE PROBLEM
-By Okochi Chukwu Obeni
"When something is condemnable it should be condemn by all not minding whose ores are gored.
When the local government Chairman took his arsenals to Amaozara Ndukwe his in-laws Compound and destroyed properties belonging his in-laws including Achi Augustine's shop over slight provocation.
We condemned it without minding how people misunderstood it and what they tagged it. And the name calling against us.
One thing is sure, injustice to one should be injustice to all.
We protested to the appropriate quarters and our agitation for justice yielded a positive result.
I wish to use this medium to appreciate the effort of Essa Ruling council Amasiri for taking up the matter and administered Justice to all.
Thanks to Isaka Ogu 111 of Isaka autonomous community Ezeogo Omezue Patrick Aja for standing with his people at this trialing time.
Thanks to human right Chairman Ebonyi state for shouldering this matter for us.
I gathered from the villagers that Essa Ruling council Amasiri set up committee of enquiry to investigate the matter. After it's findings the following decisions were taken
1. That the Afikpo North LGA local government Chairman Hon. Ogbonnia Oko Enyim should repair the damaged properties.
2. That he should repair the damaged bus and return its battery
3. That he should replace the damaged pure water from Achi's shop.
4. ESSA RULING COUNCIL AMASIRI slammed a fine of #750,000 against local government chairman to pay before the end of this month or Amasiri will visit his house for revenge.
5. ESSA RULING COUNCIL Chairman was slammed with #50,000 for taking side and trying to protect the Chairman.
I wish to appreciate the Chairman of Afikpo North LGA for speedily responding to the above ruling by ESSA RULING COUNCIL AMASIRI in repairing the damaged shops yesterday nicodemusly.
Yesterday he started repairing the damaged shops in responses to the ESSA decisions.
Kudos to him
I advice him and others to be law abiding and stop taking laws into their hand.
I plead with Ezeogo Patrick Aja and human rights Ebonyi state to takedown any suit against him since the ESSA RULING COUNCIL has done justice to the matter.
Left with 100 bags of pure water, bus, battery and others.
Our leaders must be held accountable especially when the misbehave.
Justice done at last!"
