The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons said about 2,114 Nigerians have been rescued from detention camps in Libya between January and February alone.
The NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, said this on Saturday in Benin City, Edo State, while delivering a lecture at the University of Benin. She added that Nigeria needed a “national orientation programme to dissuade youths seeking unrealistic greener pastures.”
The lecture, titled, ‘Youth migration, deportation and rehabilitation: The way forward’, was to mark the 60th birthday of an Edo State philanthropist, Dr. Idahosa Okunbo.
The NAPTIP DG said the solution to mass unemployment in Nigeria was to provide an environment conducive to foreign direct investments.
She said, “There is a need for governments at all levels to come up with a National Orientation and Reorientation programme that will change people’s attitude to migration. Without this, an attitude crisis will be another major driving force for illegal migration. Something fundamental must be done to control and contain the illegal movement of people out of the country.”
