Restructuring: APC NEC gets panel report Feb. 27

Barring any last minute changes, the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress will present the report of its panel on true federalism to the National Executive Committee of the party on February 27th.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered in Abuja that the NWC, which is currently reviewing the document, would present the report to the party’s NEC at the meeting.

The party’s NEC, which is the highest decision-making body after the National Convention, is expected to ratify the report and present to the President as the party’s official position.

Membership of NEC includes the President, Vice President, governors, principal officers of the National Assembly, former national chairmen of the legacy parties which merged to form the APC, as well as other party leaders.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed this development to SUNDAY PUNCH, in a telephone interview on Saturday.

He said, “It (the report) has to come to the National Executive Council first. It is one of the issues that will be discussed. Once it is approved, then it will be presented as the final position of the party.”

The APC set up the Governor Nasir el-Rufai-led panel on True Federalism to harmonise the public opinion on the agitation for the restructuring of the federation.

The panel was also mandated to recommend a position to be adopted by the party as contained in its manifesto. Some of the recommendations contained in the committee’s final report included power devolution to states. The report suggested that issues like the minimum wage, prison services and the control of resources, which are currently on the exclusive legislative list, should be moved to the concurrent legislative list.
