Agency donates relief materials to Libyan returnees, others

Clement   Nnachi, Abakaliki

No fewer than 16 Libyan returnees and other Internally Displaced Persons in Ebonyi State on Tuesday received empowerment items and relief materials, courtesy of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

Distributing the relief materials to the beneficiaries in Abakaliki, the state capital, the Federal Commissioner in the commission, Hajiya Sadiya Umar, represented by the Director of Human Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Ukwunta, said the Federal Government was concerned about the plight of the Libyan returnees and IDPs.

Umar said the commission would continue to sustain the intervention geared towards improving the lives of IDPs in Ebonyi State until permanent solutions were found to their plight.

“We took into account the 16 Ebonyi State indigenes that returned from Libya and required our care and support; we are here to assist them and to empower them to be self-reliant,” Umar said.

Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Secretary, Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency, Pastor Ken Nwabueze, said  the distribution of relief materials to the IDPs marked the third time that the commission was rendering such assistance to the state.

“This one is empowerment material for persons of concern in the state for their upkeep, all this is happening within a space of two years, a pointer that the commission  has the interest of the state at heart,” he said.

The SEMA boss said that the state government had introduced a lot of empowerment schemes for IDPs.

In an interview with Southern City News, two of the Libyan returnees, Mr. Bright Ugwu, 35, and Mr. Eze Obasi, 40, commended the Federal Government for facilitating their return to the country.

The returnees enjoined others not to embark on such illegal trips outside the country, stressing that there was no place like home.

Items distributed to the beneficiaries included hair dryers, towels, tissue papers, combs, shampoo,  moulding machines, clippers, mirrors among others.
