Al Khartoum didn’t sack me – Amuneke

Idris Adesina

Former Super Eagles star Emmanuel Amuneke has denied reports that he was sacked by Sudanese club Al Khartoum Al Watani after four months as their coach.

Amuneke was employed in November 2017 to replace former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, who resigned following his appointment as coach of the Black Stars. Al-Khartoum were sixth in the Sudan Premier League with 46 points when Amuneke took over in November 2017 but he led them to a fifth-place finish.

However, reports emerged on Tuesday that  Amuneke  was sacked by the club for performance-related offences. Al Khartoum are currently fourth in the Sudan Premier League with 11 points from eight matches. They lost their last match at home 3-1 to Al-Ahly Merowe.

But Amuneke on Wednesday on a radio sports programme, Top Sports, denied the reports, saying he left due to the club’s financial crisis.

“The club’s major sponsor, an electrical company in Sudan, had a change at the helm of their affairs and the new head of the organisation has not been coming forth with their obligations to the club. This has thrown the club into a financial crisis at the moment,” he said.

“They are currently having challenges paying workers and I discovered that they would not be able to honour the contract we both agreed to, so I decided to leave before it becomes something I will not be able to cope with.”
