Fusion of depth, beauty as Nigerianart.net holds exhibition

Akeem Lasisi

Many art lovers had a memorable time when Nigerianart.net recently held its maiden exhibition in Lagos.

They particularly had fun viewing the works of  emerging talents at the exhibition titled,  FUSION: Wine meets Art, organised in collaboration with La’Cour Hotels, Ikoyi.

The programme celebrated artists that included Gbolahan Omidiran and Bisi Fakeye – a deceased sculptor, showcasing a range of their artwork on the scenic grounds of the La’Cour Boutique Hotel. The works generally exuded depth and beauty.

The two-day event exhibited 93 pieces, from paintings to woodcarvings and metal works. It attracted art enthusiasts, art historians, critics and fellow brush and paint experts, with the affair punctuated with sips of South Africa’s Amarula and Nigeria’s palm wine.

The artists, whose pieces were on display, were at hand to interact with the guests and members of the public, explaining the creative direction of their works and answering questions regarding their various styles.

The Head of Public Relations, Nigerianart.net, Rukky Ray-Ekpu, described the exhibition as a success.

“The reception has been immense. This has also shown the great appreciation and appetite that exists for Nigerian Art. We at Nigerianart.net will like to use this opportunity to thank all participating artists and guests.  We assure the artists, critics and art lovers that there are more similar events lined up over the course of the year,” Ray-Ekpu added.

Observers at the event noted that with Nigerianart.net at the forefront of a new emerging market, the platform looked to set itself aside from the conventional ways art was exhibited or sold with value retained over time for both artist and the art collector. Through its website, art can be listed at no cost incurred while the site takes a modest commission on each sale.

Ray-Ekpu said, “The platform provides the Nigerian artist a pedestal for which their wonderful works can reach a wider global market space regardless of the level of experience in the field. Fresh out of Art School or self-taught artists can also have their pieces displayed. Art speaks many languages and there is always a piece of art that resonates with someone out there.”
