Tragedy struck on Friday night in the Sabon Gari, Sumaila Local Government Area of Kano State, following the death of two persons.
They were killed when police officers allegedly opened fire on some villagers, who were protesting the appointment of a new village head, Jamilu Mohammed, by the Kano Emirate Council.
According to sources, five others were injured.
Some of the villagers said trouble started when some residents prevented the new village head from entering the mosque for the Jumat prayer.
The police reportedly intervened, killing two persons in the process.
The District Head of the Sumaila Local Government Area of Kano State, Ibrahim Ado Bayero, through his spokesperson, Ibrahim Chigeri, confirmed the killings at Ruma village.
Bayero said one of the victims, Tukur Mohammed, was the younger brother of the village’s Ward Head, Sanusi Mohammed, who was said to have also been severely injured during the attack.
One of the community leaders, Sumaila Danbarau, also confirming the incident, described it as unfortunate, adding that the killings had been reported to the Police Division in the Sumaila LGA on Friday night.
