The Chairman, Board of Trustees, Wesley University, Ondo, Sir Demola Aladekomo, says the institution will partner Gallaudet University, United States America, to establish a special education faculty in Sagamu, Ogun State.
He disclosed this on Tuesday after holding a meeting with Governor Ibikunle Amosun at the governor’s office in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.
Aladekomo had led teams from both universities to pay a courtesy visit to the governor and inform him about the new initiative.
He said such a special faculty of education became necessary because 10 million Nigerians were deaf and were not accommodated in conventional varsities.
Aladekomo said the authorities of the Wesley University had acquired land in Sagamu for the project, adding that the location was centralised, with access to prospective students from the North, South, East and West and even beyond Nigeria.
He said, “I am the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Wesley University, Ondo. I have led the management teams of the Wesley University and the Gallaudet University, United States of America, on a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.
“We had intimated the governor about the partnership between the Wesley University and Gallaudet University to establish a special education faculty in Sagamu.
“The special education faculty will cater to the academic needs of the deaf and the hard in hearing, who are about 10 million. It is going to be the first of its kind in the country, because it will boast of modern equipment and personnel needed for such special education at the tertiary level.
“The choice of Sagamu was strategic, because it is a central location, whether you are coming from North, East, South or West.”
Aladekomo said the governor was excited about the project and had promised to give them all the needed support to make it a reality.
The Interim Dean of Faculty, School of Education, Business, and Human Services, Gallaudet University, USA, Dr. Khadijat Rashid, also explained that the school became necessary because others with physical challenges, were accommodated in conventional varsities, but not the deaf.
