There is growing misinterpretation over what qualifies to be gospel music. In our industry, Gospel music is a genre itself that is enjoyed by people indiscriminately.
Unfortunately, very few real understand what it is and whether what they enjoy is Gospel or Christian Music.
The audiences have been made to believe that any song that mentions either God the Father or the son or the Holy Spirit is a Gospel song.
Considering that ‘Education’ is a core role of Media, let us take some time off to understand the difference between Gospel Music and Christian Music.
So what is Christian Music?
In a few lines, Christian music is music that revolves around the beliefs, structures, cultures and narratives of Christianity. The main topics sang about include fasting, repentance, praise, penitence, worship and lament.
Wikipedia defines Christian Music as music that has been written to express either personal or a communal belief regarding Christian life and faith. The forms of Christian music vary widely across the world.
In a nutshell, Christian music is a category under Religious music that concentrates only on Christianity; its beliefs and way of life.
Let's look at Gospel Music.
The word Gospel refers to the collected narratives explaining the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are four standard gospels; Mathew, Mark, Luke and John, all found in the New Testament.
It is safe to conclude that gospel music is music that revolves around the life of Jesus Christ. His birth, growth, service, miracles, death on the cross, resurrection and ascension in to heaven.
However, gospel is also at times used to refer to non-canonical gospels, Jewish-Christian gospels, gnostic gospels and apocryphal gospels,
According to Wikipedia, Gospel Music is a music genre in Christian music. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics.

What is clear is that Gospel music is a sub category of Christian music that concentrates on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ while Christian Music is a genre that concentrates on all Christianity themes, narrations, cultures and beliefs including the gospel/good news.
