The presidency has said those demanding the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari due to the mounting security challenges in the country are only exercising their freedom of speech.https://www.independent.ng/insecurity-those-demanding-buharis-resignation-are-only-exercising-freedom-of-speech-adesina/?
It however said such freedom has its limitations.
Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President was reacting to demand by Nigerians that President Buhari should resign just as he had asked former president Goodluck Jonathan to do in 2013.
In May 2013, Buhari had asked Jonathan who was President then to vacate office for failing to tackle insecurity across the country.
While addressing journalists at his residence in Daura, Katsina state, Buhari said: “Jonathan should vacate and give way to competent hand to govern the country.”
When asked on if President Buhari should toe the same path, Adesina who was a guest on Channels Television programme ‘Politics Today’ monitored by Daily Independent said those demanding the president’s resignation are exercising their freedom of speech. He however added that such freedom of speech has its boundary.
“Under a democracy, people have freedom of speech. That is one thing that is peculiar to democracy. You have freedom of speech although that freedom also has boundary”.
“There is no freedom that does not have boundaries. The freedom that does not have boundaries will even injure thee person who is utilising that freedom”.
“So, if anybody says that kind of thing under a democracy, it is allowed but when it verges on causing chaos , that person may be asked to come and answer certain questions”.
