Power tussle stalls entrance test into Niger civil service

Enyioha Opara, Minna

The scheduled entrance test into the Niger State Civil Service Commission has been stalled by the power tussle between the chairman and commissioners in the state civil service.

It was learnt that 3,567 applicants for various positions in the civil service were to commence the test on April 3, 2018 before it was put on hold.

It was further gathered that personal, ethnic and pecuniary interests were responsible for the squabbles among the top echelons of the civil service commission.

The commission’s leadership was said to have informed the applicants that no date had been fixed for the test.

The test, according to information posted on the state’s website and Facebook page, is computer-based test, but some commissioners said no decision had been taken on the CBT.

They accused the Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Shehu Galadima, of unilaterally taking the decision on the exams.

The Permanent Commissioner 1, Mohammed Erena, who spoke on behalf of four other commissioners, denied that the applicants would take the CBT, noting that the electronic test, which would be purportedly conducted by the Federal University of Technology, Minna, “was unknown to us.”

“When I heard the rumours about the CBT, I confronted the chairman and explained to him the position of other members but he told me pointblank that the exercise must go on whether we like it or not,” he stated.

Erena said the four members kicked against their chairman’s decision “because he refused to take their opinion into consideration among which was that the computer-based test will not serve the interest of candidates in Niger State.”

Corroborating her colleague, another official of the commission, Hajia Asmau Usman, insisted that the CBT would not serve the interest of applicants from her zone because of the rural nature of the area.

She also argued that it would cost each applicant close to N20,000 to travel to and from Minna for the examination.

But the commission chairman, Galadima, disputed the claim of the commissioners, adding however that “we will go home and resolve our differences.”

The reported release of N43m to the commission was also identified as a major cause of the friction among the officials.

Our correspondent learnt that the state House of Assembly had summoned the officials over the issue and had also reportedly directed them to suspend the CBT.
